Implant Dentistry - Root Form Tooth ReplacementsAutomobile Accident Dental Trauma Treatment PlanningTreatment plans for addressing dental issues arising from physical trauma can have as many options as those treatments for non-trauma related treatments. Our patient, a 23 year old college student at a local university, was involved in an automobile accident. He had suffered multiple traumas and in particular to the maxillary jawbone resulting in the immediate destruction and loss of two anterior (front) teeth, with additional damage to a 3rd adjacent tooth.
This first photo of our treatment series shows the completion of two (2) 3i Innovations dental implants being placed in the maxilla (upper jawbone). An adjacent tooth has also been prepared for eventual placement of a new porcelain crown.Treatment Choices - Bone Loss IssuesOur patient selected the premium treatment of dental implants, versus a partial or bridge, mainly because he wanted to restore the necessary elements for preserving the integrity of his upper jaw. He understood that the dental implants would replace the critical physical properties normally provided by natural tooth roots. At his young age, our patient wanted to assure himself that bone loss wouldn't become an issue for him as he got older. Bridgework, partials and dentures don't share the dynamic elements of individual dental implants.
Our 2nd mid-treatment photo reflects the placement of healing abutments (caps) over the implants that promotes the osseointegration process whereby the jawbone fully integrates the root form implant .... a process that is normally completed within a few months.Dr. Anderson provided Essex temporaries that eliminated the problem of being toothless while the critical healing process was taking place.
Defeating the Dark Line PhenomenonOur 3rd picture reveals the placement of zirconium abutments that will provide the reflective properties needed for assuring near perfect color, shading and reflective properties of the permanet crowns that will be placed on the implants.Notice that there is no exposed metal that will interfere with long term cosmetic issues, which can be a common problem with certain types of crowns and implants (the dark line or gray line phenomenon).
The final restorations, as shown in our last post operative treatment pictures, shows the placement of ESPE Lava Crowns that are custom milled on a proprietary CAD/CAM (computer aided design) milling device. Glass inomer cements were used to overcome a common problem of implants becoming loose or wobbly.Learn more about how root form devices (dental implants) can be used to replace single teeth, multiple teeth or as a treatment for securing fixed bridges and dentures for patients who are concerned about endurance or jaw bone health issues.
